Apollo DRDO performs a rare & complex surgery of CABG along with a MVR & LV reconstruction!
- A first of its kind surgery in Andhra Pradesh
Hyderabad, September 10th 2012: The team of cardiothoracic surgeons at Apollo DRDO Hospital, led by Dr. Rajeev Trehan, Consultant Cardio-thoracic Surgeon, performed a highly complex CABG surgery along with a Mitral Valve Replacement & Left Ventricle Reconstruction, at Apollo DRDO Hospital, Kanchanbagh. A rare surgery of such complex nature was performed for the first time in Andhra Pradesh.
A 65 yr old male patient Mr. Sudhakar Reddy presented himself with severe breathlessness and sweating. He could neither lie down on bed nor even walk, due to symptoms of heart failure. He had a history of a heart attack two years ago and had undergone an angioplasty of the LAD with a stent.
Mr. Reddy had visited several reputed hospitals and cardiac surgeons in the city prior to visiting Apollo DRDO Hospital. He was refused treatment at these hospitals, considering the complexity of the treatment.
On evaluation through a PET CT at Apollo DRDO Hospital, Mr. Reddy was found to have Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) with severe leakage of mitral valve of heart and a huge LV Aneurysm – where in the heart had bloated like a bag. The case was a high risk one in view of the poor general condition of patient and his advanced age, poor pumping capacity of his heart (24%) and the long duration of the surgery. Such incidence of patients suffering from these three lesions simultaneously is around 4%.
According to Dr. Rajeev Trehan, most cases Cardiac surgeons see are for CAD alone, however in this rare case the patient had multiple problems and each one of them was complex in itself. The patient had to be treated for all three lesions of the heart, for him to recover and all this had to be done in one go, which was extremely high risk. For me and my team this case was a huge challenge. Though we had never done such a surgery, we went ahead to save the patient from the trauma.
The surgery performed on August 24th 2012, spread over 8 hours involved reconstruction of the left ventricle (called as LV restoration), replacement of the mitral valve and a bypass surgery by a team headed by Dr Rajeev Trehan, Cheif cardiac surgeon, Dr Mozahid Manzer Wahidi, cardiac anaesthetist, nurses and para-medical staff.
It is for the first time that these three procedures of the heart were performed simultaneously, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, points out Dr. Trehan.
The patient has recovered; he is in a position to do his normal routine and is ready for discharge.
