Vishu Reddy, who is known for movies like 'Mehabooba', is a budding artist. 'Liger' marks his first big-ticket project. The Vijay Deverakonda-Puri Jagannadh entertainer has him as the main antagonist.
In this interview, Vishu talks about his role in the movie, his journey so far, his collaboration with Puri, his future plans, and more.
I grew up in Hyderabad, while my father hails from Chevella. I am single and have been around in the industry since the late 2000s.
During my school and college days, I used to watch Puri Jagannadh sir's movies as a fanboy. In 2015, he gave me a call after watching one of my martial arts videos. At that time, he told me he would be making a film in the backdrop of martial arts and that I would be cast in it. It was 'Liger'.
I joined Puri Connects as CEO later and looked after 'iSmart Shankar' and 'Romantic'. I take care of everything at Puri Connects, right from looking after fuel expenses to distribution! Puri sir has always wanted to introduce corporate culture. Puri sir is a rebel and has no boundaries. As a CEO and an actor, I follow him in my work ethic.
It's a blessing that I have got to play a pivotal role in 'Liger', which is a pan-India, big-scale movie.
The audience these days are encouraging local talent. They are smart. They are deciding everyone's fate. With OTTs and multiplexes, corporates are getting to decide who should be a hero and who shouldn't be one.
My journey has been full of hiccups and obstacles. I decided to become an actor 19 years ago. Even at home, there were complaints. But I persisted. For the past few years, I have involved myself in all crafts, not limiting myself to acting. I don't expect sympathy just because I have had it hard.
Before I entered Puri sir's compound, I did small roles to learn the art of survival. I debuted in 'Josh' in 2009. I am ready to play any sort of role. I am like a white paper on which the director can write anything. I am also a writer. My wish is that Puri sir makes a Hollywood movie.
'Liger' is my first big project. I am the film's main antagonist. Martial arts has been my passion for many years. I believe in method acting. I did intensive homework for 'Liger'. I will be seen as an arrogant fighter. Vijay is an underdog. I am already a champion and he is a rookie. How our rivalry takes off is interesting.
Mike Tyson was roped in because only a legend would have suited the role. The credit for roping him in goes to Charmme Kaur; it was not easy chasing him, as he came on board after 1.5 years. You will see Tyson in a commercial role in the movie. He is in the cowboy's get-up in the trailer for a reason. He is not shown in the MMA ring. While learning martial arts, I used to closely follow Tyson's work. I like his body language and punching style. He is a sweet guy, who is like a 10-year-old. His advice is that we should do what we like the most.
'Liger' is a proper commercial masala entertainer with twists and turns. You will know it when you watch the movie. This is not a sports film or a biopic. There are mass fights, and the songs are totally commercial.
