Payal Kapadia is the talk of the town this week. At the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, her debut fiction feature, 'All We Imagine As Light', bagged a nomination in the Best Director— Motion Picture category. Her film also received a Best Motion Picture - Non-English Language nomination.

Her name will resonate for a few months to come. Cinephiles have taken note of the fact that she is the first Indian woman and third woman of Asian origin to receive a Golden Globe nomination. "Also, she is the first Indian director to be nominated for a non English film," a cinephile reminded.

With the rise of Payal Kapadia, parallel cinema has been rejuvenated. "Payal has brought a new sense of possibility and hope to the fast-declining space of independent cinema. This achievement, I hope, will inspire more people to recognize the faith and beauty that lies in cinema that is not only experimental but also experiential," opined Anurag Verma. "Payal Kapadia’s delicate, dreamlike tale of loneliness and fellowship has been voted the best film of the year by our critics," wrote Sight and Sound magazine recently about 'All We Imagine As Light'.
