Harshavardhan Rameshwar of 'Arjun Reddy' and 'Kabir Singh' fame awaits his next big theatrical release this April 7. He has composed the music for Ravi Teja's prestigious 'Ravanasura', a thriller directed by Sudheer Varma.
In this interview, he talks about working with director Sudheer Varma, his journey so far, and more.
I have composed four songs and BGM for 'Ravanasura'. Bheems has done a special song. I teamed up with producer Abhishek Nama for Kalyanram's 'Devil'. Since he is also the producer of 'Ravanasura', he asked me to compose a tune for the film's title song to begin with. A brief was given and I worked on the tune. After I was done, the producer surprised me by offering the film. When I was confirmed, I didn't know Ravi Teja is the hero. As a fan, it is a dream come true for me. It was an out-of-the-world moment for me.
'Devil' is a spy thriller. On the other hand, 'Ravanasura' is an action thriller. Director Sudheer Varma expects the tunes to be innovative. His approach is always different concerning frequencies and flavour. He doesn't want the composer to be one-dimensional. Remixing 'Veyyinokka Jillala Varaku' was a learning experience. It was the director's idea to use a whistling sound to amp up the entertainment value. The remix was a challenging job that had to be massy. The hero, too, felt that the remix is quite fresh.
At the script level, 'Ravanasura' balances the thrills and commercial elements. That helped me get a grip on the tunes. The flow was a creatively smooth process.
In my opinion, the BGM has to be linked to the story. That's why the same music director composes both songs and BGM for our movies.
'Arjun Reddy' remains my calling card. All the offers that I have received thus far are because of that movie. 'George Redy' allowed me to bring out a new kind of sound. 'Ravanasura', I expect, will catapult me to the next league.
I started as a Rhythm player. Laxminarayana, my father, is an icon in the field of rhythm. He worked with the likes of AR Rahman and Chakravarthi. While studying Intermediate, I branched out into other instruments and learned music. I became a song programmer and worked on Kannada and Tamil movies, too. I worked with Ghibran, Radhan, Deva, and many others. When working with Radhan, I programmed background score as well. Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the director of 'Arjun Reddy', encouraged me by giving me the responsibility for BGM.
I am doing 'Animal' with Sandeep Reddy next. It's a Bollywood project. I have previously done 'Kabir Singh' in Hindi but since it was a remake of 'Arjun Reddy', I didn't find much difference. I think the working experience on 'Animal' will be different. Since Ranbir Kapoor is a big hero, intensive groundwork is being prepared.
I am a Telugu. My father was a native of Rajahmundry. He moved to Madras. I want to do all sorts of films belonging to various genres. It's the director's thinking that sparks creativity in the composer.
