The final 30-minute stretches of 'Kantara' and 'Animal' have the quality of being trend-setters.
The pre-climax action block in 'Pushpa 2' is inspired by the raw energy and the insane 'I am uncontrollable and possessed' vibe of Rishab Shetty's climactic act in 'Kantara'. The way 'A Film By Sukumar' flashes on the screen is also inspired by how the title 'Kantara' appeared in that Kannada blockbuster at a particular juncture.
'Pushpa 2' tries to mimic the emotional beats of Sandeep Vanga's 'Animal' to an extent. The final stretches of 'Animal' offered an emotional payoff in terms of how Ranbir Kapoor's character and his father relive sentimental moments. In 'Pushpa 2', something similar happens (not exactly between a father and a son). And credit goes to Sukumar for giving primacy to emotions in the climax of a mass-friendly sequel.
For years to come, 'Kantara' and 'Animal' will be a benchmark. The only director who will go beyond them will be SS Rajamouli. 'Pushpa 2' is currently showing at the cinemas.
