If you are not into watching YouTube releases, you might probably not be aware of Bandi Saroj Kumar (an actor, writer, director, producer, composer and editor). Those who know his work see him as a cult filmmaker. His support base includes thousands of male audience members. 'Nirbandham', 'Mangalyam' and 'Nirbandham 2' had interesting narrative structures.
However, his debut theatrical release, titled 'Parakramam', is a damp squib in terms of commercial traction. The film was released in theatres on August 22 without a semblance of 'hadavidi'. Its production values (be it cinematography, sound design or other aspects) are so poor that you wonder if BSK did make the film for a theatrical audience in the first place. He has been blamed for not taking the audience seriously.
'Parakramam' is also the first film that BSK wrote before the film went on the floors. He is someone who writes on the location extempore. But he is no Sukumar for the producers to take him seriously if he doesn't jettison his old ways. He has to come up with a proper script the next time.
Bandi Saroj Kumar, fortunately for him, enjoys the goodwill of 'Baby' director Sai Rajesh and producer SKN of Mass Movie Makers. Vishwak Sen and quite a few other actors are also aware of his work and are confident that he will go a long way. For now, though, his struggles continue.
