Social media curse: Bollywood might be imitating Hollywood

Usually, Hollywood is an industry to look up to. The industry has pioneered many innovations, including the franchise cinema format. India took to sequels and franchises much later.

But there are certain features for which Hollywood is slammed. At times, Hollywood studios use social media analytics to gauge audience preferences and tailor marketing campaigns. So far, so good. But its studios and casting directors often consider an actor’s social media presence as a quantifiable measure of their ability to draw audiences.

As per trade analyst Taran Adarsh, something similar has been playing out in the Hindi film industry. "In the past, producers and directors would personally narrate their stories to actors. But today’s actors live in a bubble, disconnected from reality. Decision-making is often influenced by social media analytics rather than genuine storytelling," Taran has been quoted as saying by ANI. He added that Bollywood needs to "return to authentic storytelling and audience connection if it wants to revive its golden days".

In recent years, Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, among others, has been criticized for spoiling the Bollywood culture. The Metro-centric nature of Hindi films has been blamed on him and other makers from well-established film families.
