When film critics trashed James Cameron's 'Titanic'

James Cameron may be regarded as the face of the post-New Hollywood era, but when his iconic movie 'Titanic' was released in 1997, many critics trashed it. What makes us remember it today is that Cameron's latest film 'Avatar 2', too, has been trashed by a few critics from the West.

'Titanic', which went on to become the highest-grossing film in the world at that time, was described as a "hackneyed" film by LA Times. The critic also called it a completely derivative copy of old Hollywood romances. He then went on to opine that 'Titanic' lacked even minimal originality.

Time, too, wrote a mostly negative review. Salon noted that 'Titanic' came with zero sensitivity. These criticisms sound shockingly shallow today.

Yes, most of the critics were glowing in praising 'Titanic' but the point is that, like 'Avatar 2', it too faced negativity.
