Bollywood playback singer Sonu Nigam has questioned the lack of the Government's intent to recognize iconic singers from the Hindi film industry. In a social media post, he pointed out that contemporary singers such as Shreya Ghoshal haven't received the Padma honour. Shockingly, the legendary Kishore Kumar is yet to receive a Padma honour.
"There are two singers who have inspired artists all over the world. One of them was limited to the Padma Shri award — that’s Mohammed Rafi saab. The other didn’t even receive a Padma Shri, Kishore Kumar ji. Awards are being given posthumously as well, right?” wrote Sonu Nigam.
He added, “Among the current singers is Alka Yagnik ji, who has had such a long and phenomenal career. She hasn’t received anything yet. Shreya Ghoshal has demonstrated brilliance for years and should be honoured. Sunidhi Chauhan has inspired an entire generation with her unique voice, but she has yet to be recognised.”
It may be noted that SP Balasubrahmanyam was honored with the Padma Shri in 2001, the Padma Bhushan in 2011, and the Padma Vibhushan posthumously in 2021. Lata Mangeshkar was a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour.
