Tollywood must worry as Karnataka sets maximum movie ticket price at Rs 200

In a move aimed at making cinema "more accessible", the Karnataka government has implemented a fixed upper limit of Rs 200 for all movie tickets throughout the state. Even multiplexes and not just single screens must abide by the rule.

Tollywood might have to worry. Similar thinking might be espoused by the Telangana government in the near future. Both Karnataka and Telangana have a commonality: Congress governments rule the States. Also, some leaders belonging to the ruling party in both States have made statements against the film industry in the recent past.

In the wake of the Sandhya Theatre stampede incident in December last year, a handful of Congress leaders, including Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, made noises. Already, there is no permit for hiking ticket prices for big-ticket movies in Telangana. If a similar cap as in Karnataka were to be imposed in Telangana, the Nizam market will take a hit.
