Re-releases have been the forte of the Telugu market. With the Hindi film Tumbbad doing phenomenal business upon its re-release, looks like Bollywood has now woken up to the potential of the re-release mania.
When it was first released in 2018, the folk horror film made just about Rs 16 Cr.
The re-release this September and October has fetched the movie double the amount. Tumbbad is literally the biggest blockbuster ever among re-releases.
Producer Sohum Shah is planning a sequel. Making the exciting announcement recently, he assured the fans of the movie that the sequel will "dig deeper into the theme of greed". The first part starred Sohum Shah himself in the lead. The sequel, he said, will come with "bigger twists and a more intense exploration of what happens when greed knows no limits."
Tumbbad's success also means that certain underrated movies have a chance at redemption if the re-release strategy is calibrated.
